How to Make Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Having toenail fungus can be unsightly, and painful if not caught early on. In the early stages, you may notice discoloration of the nail bed or your toenail may become thick and might even start to crumble. Tea tree oil, applied at the first signs of the fungus, can help greatly in the appearance and spreading of the fungus. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, and can be readily found at most drug stores or super-stores.

Tea tree oil, applied at the first signs of the fungus, can help greatly in the appearance and spreading of the fungus.  Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, and can be readily found at most drug stores or super-stores.

Another remedy that has been used successfully is to wash your feet with antibacterial soap, making sure to dry them thoroughly, between the toes especially.  Once your toes/nails are completely dry, get an eye dropper, and drop white vinegar under the nail and at the base of the nail as many times a day as you can.  You can then use a cuticle or orange stick to clean the dead cells out from under the nail. This remedy works quickly if you are diligent about doing it.

Clear iodine, which absorbs into the nail within seconds, is also effective. You would apply it as you would the vinegar, under the nail and at the base of the nail.  This can be found at a lot of drugstores.  This iodine doesn’t stain or discolor.  You may feel slight tingling with this remedy and it’s reported that this is quite normal and means it’s working.  Be warned, clear iodine can smell initially like cat urine, for a few seconds until it dries, then it is odorless.

Some people swear by Listerine, the mouthwash.  Simply soak a cotton ball in Listerine and apply over the nail. Hold in place with tape.  Leave on for as long as possible and remove and scrape under the nail and the nail bed.

Remember, with nail fungus, the fungus will not totally be gone until you grow a new nail.  So you need to keep up with the remedy of your choosing until you have a full new nail.

With any home remedy, you need to watch for further infection, or if you notice your fungus is getting worse, spreading, becomes red, tender or any other signs of infection means you need to visit your doctor as soon as possible to have it looked at and be prescribed medication.

Most home remedies work well when you catch the fungus early, before it really does damage or gets too bad.  Always keep your toes and nails dry, making sure to dry well between the toes as well. Use powder on your feet to also help keep them dry.  If you notice any signs of infection, do not re-use your bath towels, as a fungus infection is highly contagious.
